BOCA RATON, FL - Anne Vaughn & Joanne Marras Tate took the top spot in the Seniors Only Divsion at the 2011 Fiesta on Siesta Key Beach Volleyball Tournament over the weekend. Both athletes finished up their FAU volleyball careers last fall. With the win, Anne and Joanne have earned a spot in the CBS Sports ALT Games Collegiate Beach Championships, May 13 & 14 in San Diego, California. Vaughan and Tate defeated the team of Angela Bensend and Brittany Johnson of LSU in the finals.
USA Volleyball and the CBS Sports Network, in association with the AVCA, are hosting the 5th Annual CBS Sports Alt Games Collegiate Beach Championships. Pool play and Quarter-final action will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista from 8 am-6 pm on Friday, May 13. The Semifinals and Finals will be held right on the beach in front of the Wave House on Mission Beach on Saturday May 14.
The Collegiate Beach Championship was started by CBS Sports, the AVCA and the AVP in April of 2007 and is credited as a factor in collegiate sand volleyball being placed on the NCAA's Emerging Sports List. The finals will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
For the first time ever, the event will include both a men's and women's competition. Should Vaughn and Marras Tate capture the CBS Alt Games Beach Championship, they will receive a wild-card team entry and travel stipend for a USAV Pro event to be held in May or June.
Three other teams represented FAU. Ashton Krajewski and Isabelle Arboleda competed in the Gold Division as did Darija Sataric and Lauren Jones. The team of rising juniors Georgia Robinson and Cintia Nightingale finished 5th in the Silver Division.
