Boca Raton, Fla. - Junior outfielder Alex Hudak drove in three runs and had two of the team's 11 hits as the Florida Atlantic University baseball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 6-2 victory over Monmouth University on Saturday at the FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton.
The Owls improve to 9-3 on the season and will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 6, in search of their second series sweep at noon. Monmouth falls to 2-3 on the spring calendar.
FAU struck again early, scoring four runs in the first inning. It marks the fourth straight contest that the Owls have scored in their first at-bats of the game. The team has outscored its' opponents 19-4 during the five-game winning streak.
Senior outfielder Andy Mee started the scoring with a groundout to second base that the Hawks' fielder could not get out of his glove. That error led to senior second baseman Raymond Church to score. Church began the frame with a base hit to right-center field to extend his hitting streak to 21 straight games - the longest string in five seasons when Mike McKenna had a 23-game hit streak in 2006.
Sophomore outfielder Nathan Pittman would score to give FAU a 2-0 advantage on a RBI single to center field by senior first baseman Dan Scheffler. Hudak lined a base hit to right field to plate Mee while senior shortstop Nick DelGuidice lined a double off the right field wall to score a hustling Hudak from first base with two outs to round out the first inning fireworks.
Junior Paul Davis was sharp on the mound, picking up his third win of the season (3-0) with six strong innings. He retired the first seven batters he faced and struck out three batters in his first start of the season. The only blemish was Nick Pulsonetti's two-run home run in the sixth inning.
FAU extended its lead in the third inning on Hudak's two-run home run to right field. The blast was the first career home run for the junior college transfer.
The Owls recorded double-digit hits for the fourth straight game. Hudak paced the offensive attack going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. He continues to lead the team with a .472 batting average. Scheffler tallied three hits and drove in one run. Church rounded out the multiple hit performers, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. He is hitting .388 this season and .406 during the hitting streak.
Junior left hander Ahmed Garcia tossed a scoreless seventh inning while junior right hander Hugh Adams had four strikeouts in two flawless innings to help secure Davis' win.
Monmouth's Jamie Rosenkranz had two of the Hawks' six hits. Starting pitcher Pat Light suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs. Two unearned runs were scored while he was on the mound. Light drops to 0-2 on the season.
