Boca Raton, Fla. - Standout performances by Florida Atlantic University tennis players Marc Abdelnour and Marlene Ryan didn't go unappreciated - earning the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week Awards in their respective sports. The honors were announced Wednesday by conference officials.
This marks the third time this season that Abdelnour has been recognized, while Ryan was honored for the first time in her career.
Abdelnour tied a FAU record for career total victories with a pair of wins during Sunday's match against George Washington University and going 5-1 in three matches during the week. One more victory will top Doug Devriendt's mark of 138 total victories achieved from 1999 to 2002. The senior from Syria scored a straight-set victory to help the Owls defeat Sun Belt Conference rival Troy University at No. 1 singles. Then, Abdelnour posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory to anchor singles play against George Washington on Sunday. These performances came after travelling across the world from representing Syria in Davis Cup competition.
Meanwhile, Ryan had a dazzling 10-0 record for the week, helping the women's team win five consecutive matches. The sophomore from Delray Beach won all five singles matches at the No. 2 position and was also 5-0 as a teammate at No. 2 doubles. She combined with junior Justine Humair to score the clinching doubles match point, and dominated the No. 2 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-4, in the Owls' 4-3 victory over Troy on Sunday.
Both teams will continue the spring season this week in preparation for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on April 21-24 at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Ala.
