BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team hosted its second tournament in as many weeks and participated in the third of the young 2011 season. The Owls were 3-2 on the weekend with big victories on Saturday versus UConn and Jacksonville. The third came on Sunday versus Kent State.
Senior Rose Gressley took control of the mound allowing just one earned run in 21 innings of work. Gressley tallied 19 strike outs, including a season high eight on Sunday. The senior also played a key role offensively hitting .353 with two doubles and a triple.
The Owls continued to make adjustments to the line-up both offensively and defensively. Carly Speerin, who played both short and third led the team with a .600 batting average. Speerin was 9-of-15 on the weekend with a double and two triples. The triples came in the same game.
The weekend was also a special weekend for the players who used the opportunity to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. FAU players recently lost a friend of the program to brain cancer. All monies raised throughout the weekend are going to be donated in the name of Keilly Pike to St. Jude's.
This weekend FAU will play host to Harvard, Michigan State, Providence, Seton Hall, Stony Brook, and South Carolina. This tournament billed as the Miken Classic will feature seven teams, unlike FAU's traditional six team tournament. Fans please make a note of it so that you are ready for more action on Sunday.
