BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team closed out their portion of the "Strike Out Cancer" Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Kent State University, Sunday morning.
The Owls, who were the visitors as the No. 4 seed on Championship Sunday, scored three runs in the top of the second. With one out, Carly Speerin and Hailey Broyles hit back-to-back singles and moved to second and third on an illegal pitch. Kerri Croney, who was 2-for-4, tripled down the right field line, the first of two on the day for Croney, to score both Speerin and Broyles. Croney then came home on an illegal pitch.
FAU took advantage of a strong pitching performance by senior Rose Gressley who allowed just three hits in her complete game outing. Gressley walked two and retired a season high eight batters via the strike out.
Heather Barnes singled in Whitley Herb in the fifth for an insurance run. Croney who hit her second triple of the day, scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Gressley.
Maryland hosted Pitt in the final game of the day while UConn defeated JU in the day's opening game 3-2. All games were a part of a six team tournament which the Owls have billed as "Strike out for Cancer" and are collecting funds as well as selling t-shirts in an effort to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The donation will be made in the name of Keilly Pike, a young lady that the FAU softball team mentored until her battle with brain cancer took her life at the age of 17, last November.
