BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team played host to its third tournament and participated in its fourth of the 2011 season Friday. FAU (6-10) defeated Harvard University 4-1 in the Owls' first game of the day and fell to Providence College 6-5 in the final game of the day.
The first game saw Carly Speerin continue her hitting ways with a 2-for-3 plate performance. Speerin knocked in a run as did Jordan Stovall who was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. In all the Owls had nine hits for Rose Gressley who moved to 3-6 on the year. Gressley had nine strikeouts in the game.
FAU played Providence immediately after and held a 3-2 lead until PC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Providence scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth behind three hits and three FAU errors to take a 6-3 lead. FAU's Brittany Walker, who was 3-for-4 on the night with three RBI, belted a double in the top of the seventh to pull within one but PC would retire the next two FAU hitters to hold on to the one run victory.
Gressley was 2-for-4 in game two while fellow pitcher Taylor Fawbush, who fell to 3-4 on the season, was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Fawbush had two strikeouts. The second day of the Miken Classic will begin 9 a.m. Saturday. The Owls will play the night cap at 8 p.m.
