BOCA RATON, FL - Dominating pitching performances by both Taylor Fawbush and Rose Gressley helped the Florida Atlantic softball team to a sweep on the first day of the Strike Out Cancer tournament on Friday.
In the first game, Fawbush pitched her way out of a two on, no-out jam in the first inning by getting three straight batters to ground to her in the circle. The Owls took advantage in the bottom of the inning when Gressley tripled in Jordan Stovall to put FAU ahead 1-0. A Huskie fielding error allowed two more runs to score in the bottom of the fourth. Gressley struck out seven and gave up just three hits in the victory.
The game against Jacksonville was a pitchers' duel from the outset as neither team had a runner get past second base through the first five innings. The Owls were able to break through in the sixth when a Whitley Herb single and Dolphin fielding error set the table for Gressley. She roped a two-run double to left that provided all the offense Fawbush would need in the circle as she allowed just three hits in the game.
FAU continues action at the Strike Out Cancer tournament on Saturday when they face Kent State and Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. Live stats will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com.
