Boca Raton, FL - The player's names may change, but the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team continues to have success on the court. Now, the Owls, featuring six newcomers, are preparing for their biggest challenge of the fall season when they battle some of the region's top players in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional Championships on October 20 in Athens, Ga.
"Our fall season is in overdrive now," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "We had back-to-back weekend tournaments on the road. Those tournaments are the best ways for a new team to come together. The players have been giving their best for one another consistently."
The doubles tandem of junior Taylor Albrecht and freshman Will Neuner has had the most success this fall, winning all three matches during the State of Florida Championships two weeks ago. The duo posted victories over teams from Florida State University and the University of Miami in the tournament and now has a 4-1 record for the season.
Albrecht has joined freshmen Garrett Betsarakis and Will Neuner in posting two singles victories this fall.
"The team is going to limits that we have not gone before," said Albrecht. "We have been successful during the first part of this semester because of our strong effort and commitment to the team."
Neuner also shared Albrecht's comments but feels like the team can still improve in some areas.
"We have come a long way during this first six weeks (this fall). We still have a long ways to go, but we have seen steady improvement," said Neuner.
FAU players will put the lessons learned in early-season matches into practice at the ITA regional tournament.
"We are on the correct path," noted Stokes. "The best part is that we are doing it together."
