Athens, GA - Freshman tennis player Chris Janssen won both qualifying matches to highlight Florida Atlantic University's performance on Thursday in the opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga.
Janssen earned a straight-set victory over UCF's Juan Bolona before defeating University of North Florida's Leo Nahar in three sets (5-7, 6-0, 6-1). The Deerfield Beach native won a first-set tiebreaker 7-3 before dropping only one game in the second frame of the morning match. The two victories moved Janssen into the main singles draw, where he will battle the University of Miami's Gabriel Flores on Friday.
"Thursday was an okay day for qualifying," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "Chris did a good job of battling through two matches. We had too many peaks and valleys in the other matches. We're a young team that's learning each time on the court. The team is excited to begin main draw in singles and doubles tomorrow."
Junior Taylor Albrecht is also in the singles main draw and will begin tournament action on Friday against Florida A&M University's C. Salif Kante. Freshman Will Neuner will battle North Florida's Julian Belair in a first-round match.
Freshmen Sean Bacha and Robert Dubuque suffered hard-fought three-set losses during Thursday's qualifying rounds.
Bacha won the opening set 6-3 before falling to Stetson University's Hans Adrian Riseng 6-3, 6-4. Dubuque also captured the first set by winning a tiebreaker 7-4 in a loss to Jacksonville University's Larry Condez. Dubuque dropped the final two sets by 6-4, 6-1 scores.
In doubles action, the team of freshman Will Neuner and Albrecht will battle UNF's Belair and Beau Treyz during Friday's first round. The tandem of Janssen and Bacha will face sixth-seeded Bob van Overbeek and Andrew Butz of the University of Florida in the afternoon matches.
