BOCA RATON, FL - The defense edged out the offensive unit 16-13 as the Florida Atlantic University football team conducted its annual FanFest scrimmage on Saturday in front of a large crowd at the Tom Oxley Athletic Fields. This was the final tune-up for the regular-season opener on Thursday, September 2 at UAB.
"If you look at the score it was a low scoring game, but it also was a competitive game," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head football coach. "I was pleased more with today's exhibition than with last week's performance."
FAU had numerous tents with prizes, performance by the marching band and spirit teams and games prior to the football scrimmage. Fans could also purchase previous year game-day apparel.
During the scrimmage, the defense struck first as redshirt senior cornerback Tavious Polo picked off a pass in the end zone. That earned the defense three points. The offense responded with a score of its own on a redshirt senior running back Jeff Blanchard five-yard touchdown scamper. Blanchard made a hard cut after a sweep around the right tackle before diving toward the corner of the end zone. FAU's defense continued the theme of creating turnovers when redshirt sophomore defensive back Tony Rodriguez intercepted a tipped pass from redshirt sophomore quarterback Graham Wilbert.
Individually, redshirt junior running back Alfred Morris paced the ground attack with 59 yards on six carries. Redshirt freshman wide receiver DeAndre Richardson had four receptions for 38 yards while senior wide receiver Lester Jean recorded 41 receiving yards.
Redshirt senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp finished the scrimmage with 142 passing yards on 12 completions of his 22 attempts.
In the kicking game, redshirt senior Ross Gornall was successful on two field goal attempts on the afternoon. He connected on his longest effort, a 32-yard kick, during the first half.
Scrimmage format featured three downs for the offense to move the chains, prior to the defenses 20, and traditional scoring. The defense earned a point for stopping the offense in three downs, three points for a turnover and six points for a score. FAU football will be back on the Tom Oxley Practice Field at 4 p.m. Sunday. All practices are free and open to the public.
Season tickets as well as single-game tickets are on sale and can be purchased on line or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
