BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team drew praise throughout practice Tuesday as the team continued to try different combinations and systematically work through preseason camp.
The first session began at 8 a.m. with stretching, punt drills and individual position work. Following the hour and a half workout the team then shed their shoulder pads and rested for session two.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Graham Wilbert hit redshirt freshman Nexon Dorvilus over the middle for a 25 yard gain. Senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp connected with Alfred Morris over the middle despite being flanked by two defenders. The session wasn't all offense. Ed Alexander, a redshirt senior tipped a Van Camp pass and batted it three times before he gained control for the interception. Redshirt Freshman Winfred Strickland also picked up an INT. Team drills saw Rob Housler make a nice curl route catch. Defensive lineman, Jimmy Jean, who is battling for a spot with the ones, batted down a pass.
The evening session saw Wilbert hit Lester Jean for a score as well as a long connection to DeAndre Richardson. It was a good day for the offensive line that drew praise from Offensive Coordinator Darryl Jackson while the ones were facing the ones. Their work also allowed Van Camp to hit Avery Holley three-consecutive times. The first and 10 session was opened with a Willie Floyd run. Xavier Stinson returned to full contact and made the defense pay with a short pass that he extended. Long yardage situations saw Van Camp his Housler up the middle. Offensive Line Coach Dale Williams broke out the praise for the "O" line when Van Camp connected with David Muniz for a score. The celebration was short lived. The next play saw Tony Rodriguez break up a pass to Richardson.
Jeff Blanchard had the score during the goal line drills and the defense recovered a fumbled snap and made several stops.
"I thought there was good improvement in the offense. The defense is working hard and the offensive line is starting to keep the defense on their side of the line, better," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head coach. "Saturday will be a big day for us," Schnellenberger added referring to the next scrimmage.
FAU's preseason practice work will continue on Wednesday. The team will take the field at 3:30 p.m. All practices are free and open to the public.
The Owls will kick-off the 2010 season Thursday, September 2 at UAB. Season tickets as well as single-game tickets are on sale and can be purchased on line or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
