BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team was on the practice field at 8 a.m., again at 10:15 and concluded its second three-a-day practice of the 2010 preseason camp with a 4:30 p.m. practice.
The Owls, who are at the mid-way point of camp, are scheduled to have two more three-a-day practices prior to the season opener September 2, at UAB. "The defense continues to improve," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head coach. "The offense has a double whammy. They have a lack of healthy player, new players playing center and the defense hounding them...we will be ready though."
Senior free safety Ed Alexander had a leaping interception in the day's second practice and Brentley Harstad, vying for the same position ended the same drill with an INT. Seven-on-seven drills saw senior Jeff Van Camp connect on back-to-back long passes to Avery Holley and Lester Jean. Graham Wilbert stepped in under center and connected with DeAndre Robinson over the middle. When it was Van Camp's turn again he hit Rob Housler for 20 yards, Holley for 30 and once more to Holley in the back of the end zone on a crossing pattern. During the morning's team drills Nexon Dorvilus hauled in a big pass from Van Camp and then scored on a pass from Wilbert.
The third practice got started with a Holley reverse. The defense drew excitement when linebacker David Hinds grabbed an interception but it was only a matter of minutes before freshman newcomer Marcus Cunningham had a big catch in first and 10 situations. DeAndre Robinson also had a nice catch down the sideline followed by two big runs, including a scoring run by Alfred Morris. Rob Housler got into the highlight action while Curtis Cross kept the offense playing it safe with an interception. The final play of the day was an interception by senior corner Tarvoris Hill.
FAU will begin its final week of preseason, without classes, on Monday. The team will take the field at 3:30 p.m., all practices are open to the public. The Owls will kick-off the 2010 season Thursday, September 2 at UAB. Season tickets as well as single-game tickets are on sale and can be purchased on line or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
