BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team completed the first three-a-day practice on Thursday and look forward to a Friday scrimmage.
The day got under way at 8 a.m. but most of the interesting action began in the 10:30 a.m. practice. Marcus Bartels, the junior defensive back that led the Owls in 2009 with 112 tackles, grabbed a pick from senior starting quarterback Jeff Van Camp during 7-on-7. The offense countered when redshirt sophomore David Kooi connected with junior tight end Darian Williams. Van Camp was flushed from the pocket, but found Alfred Morris, the 2009 Sun Belt Conference rushing leader who gained control of the pass he initially juggled and went the distance for an offensive score.
The team broke for lunch and meetings only to return to the field for the third and final practice at 4:30 p.m. The first session was devoted to kick coverage and return then all players worked the remainder of practice concentrating on the blitz, and situational team, including first and 10, long and finally red zone.
"Each day they get a little bit better and they are working hard to get better," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head coach.
Underclassmen Nexon Dorvilus and Byron Hankerson gathered in passes during the first and 10 drills, while Cory Henry batted down a pass and Brentley Harstad and Kevin Cyrille combine for a big hit on Alex Fick, who had a reception over the middle. Senior linebacker Michael Lockley penetrated the line to stop a run.
The red zone portion was all Jeff Van Camp and Lester Jean who connected in the corner of the end zone. Demetrius Williamson did bat one out of Jean's hands and followed it up by stopping Tony Moore's run behind the line of scrimmage. FAU's preseason practice work will continue 3:30 p.m. Friday with a scrimmage. All practices are free and open to the public.
The Owls will kick-off the 2010 season Thursday, September 2 at UAB. Season tickets as well as single-game tickets are on sale and can be purchased on line or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
