Boca Raton, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University football team got the hitting in early and often with the famed Oklahoma drill as the Owls conducted the first day of practice with full shoulder pads on Wednesday afternoon at the Tom Oxley Athletic Complex.
The defensive unit continues to make plays and create turnovers as redshirt junior defensive back Curtis Cross intercepted a pass during a drill that matched the secondary against the wide receivers on one side of the field. Meanwhile, the offense also showcased its talent when redshirt senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp connected with senior wide receiver Lester Jean on a crossing pattern that created a touchdown.
The seven-on-seven portion of practice had the opportunistic defense striking again as redshirt senior cornerback Tarvoris Hill intercepted a pass from Van Camp. Later, sophomore linebacker David Hines lunged across to pick off a pass from redshirt sophomore David Kooi. Both interceptions came when the alert FAU defenders jumped to break up the offensive unit's pass routes.
The practice session closed with the Owls going through a series of 11-on-11 situations. Redshirt senior tight end Rob Housler made a leaping catch down the right side of the formation to pick up 20 yards. Redshirt senior running back Willie Floyd turned an intermediate passing route into a touchdown when he used his quickness to break free from the defense. Jean would find the end zone again on a deep pass from Van Camp down the right side of the field.
FAU's preseason work continues on Thursday with the first three-a-day practices as the players and coaches take to the field at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. All practices are free and open to the public.
The Owls will kick off the 2010 season on Thursday, September 2 at UAB. Season tickets and single game tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased on line or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
