FGCU Slugs Past FAU 8-5 on Tuesday

BOCA RATON, FL - The FAU baseball team was unable to hold onto an lead and fell to Florida Gulf Coast 8-5 on Tuesday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Owls (31-18) took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Raymond Church led off the inning with his fifth home run of the season to put FAU ahead 1-0.
Chase Vergason added to that lead in the second, blasting his first career home run, a two-run shot over the right field wall to give FAU a 3-0 lead.
However, the Eagles (32-16) stormed back and scored four runs in the fourth of FAU starter Kevin Alexander to take a 4-3 lead. The big hit was a two-run double off the bat of Luke Smierciak that gave FGCU their first lead of the game.
After FAU hit answered with a solo home run by Nathan Pittman to the game at 4-4 in the fourth, FGCU pounded out another four run inning in the fifth to take the lead for good at 8-4.
Hugh Adams (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season and did not pitch well in the fifth, allowing two home runs and four runs total in just one inning of work.
Patrick Nathanson (5-3) earned the win for FGCU and pitched very well in releif of starter Jacob Barnes. The left-hander went six innings and gave up only four hits and two earned runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.
FAU tacked on their final run in the bottom of the fifth when Eddie Cassidy's RBI single scored Andy Mee and capped off the scoring at 8-5.
Mee finished the game 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
Lou Morey also had a solid game in relief for FAU. The senior right-hander pitched four scoreless innings and only allowed three hits with no walk and four strikeouts and gave the Owls a chance to get back in the game during the later innings.
The Owls will be back in action on tomorrow when they travel north to take on #6 Florida in Gainesville. FAU defeatedthe Gators last season marking their only victory over a ranked opponent in 2009. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Alfred A. McKethan Stadium at Perry Field. The game can be heard live on www.fausports.com.
