Gainesville, Fla. - Senior Ervin Garibovic advanced to the second round of singles competition to highlight the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team's performance on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional championship in Gainesville, Fla.
"As a team, we are making small improvements and getting closer to where we want and need to be for the spring season," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach.
Garibovic picked up his first victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over University of North Florida's Bueregard Treyz to advance to Friday's second round.
In other action, sophomore Derek Madon dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Njal Stene of Stetson University and freshman Oliver Webb fell 6-4, 6-4 to North Florida's Mortiz Buerchner.
Senior Marc Abdelnour is the tournament's No. 13 seeded player and drew a first round bye. He is scheduled to play University of South Florida's Jamal Adderly at noon on Friday. The Syria native will also team with Garibovic in doubles action on the second day of tournament play.
"Day Two awaits with tough second round singles matches for Ervin and Marc," said Stokes. "The boys are ready and excited."
Singles matches are scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. from the University of Florida, with doubles matches being played throughout the afternoon.
