Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team will play in its most prestigious fall event during this weekend's Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The tournament begins on Thursday, October 21 and will continue through Monday, October 25.
The tournament's singles and doubles champions earn automatic bids to the National Indoor Championships from Thursday, November 4 through Sunday, November 7 at the United States Tennis Association's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
"The environment at the ITA regional tends to bring out our best competitive efforts," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "The boys are well prepared and determined to show what we have learned from the first two fall tournaments . . . We are excited to return to the University of Florida this fall for this tournament."
The Owls' top contenders could be senior Marc Abdelnour, who stands 5-2 in singles action this season and defeated nationally ranked Christian Blocker at the University of Miami Fall Invitational. The Syria native is seeded in the event and has a bye into Friday's second round of competition. Last year he went 1-1 in both singles and doubles action at last year's regional.
Fellow senior Ervin Garibovic will be looking for his first win of the season. Three of his six matches this fall have been extended to three sets before losing.
Rounding out this year's team is redshirt-senior Daniel Vardag, sophomore Derek Madon, and freshmen Oliver Webb and Andrew Sloan.
