BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team enjoyed football in paradise Sunday afternoon with nearly a two-hour practice devoted to getting better and establishing the things better.
The practice did not begin with special teams as it normally does. It began with individual work, working on footwork and agility. The squad then moved into 7-on-7 on the respective offense and defensive fields and spent more than half on team work. Xavier Stinson had a few strong carries while tight end Darian Williams gathered several passes. Sophomore David Kooi also connected with Alfred Morris, the team's leading ball carrier.
Defensively, the weekly Sun Belt Conference statistics were released. The Owls sit atop the standings in scoring defense allowing opponents an average of 26.6 points per game. FAU is also ranked first among league schools in red zone defense at 62.5 percent. The Owls will need this defense heading into the weekend when they face Arkansas State who is ranked no. 1 in the league in red zone offense converting 92.3 percent of the time. The Redwolves are no. 2 in SBC scoring offenses. A year ago at this time, FAU was ranked no. 8 in the league in scoring defense and no. 9 in red zone defense
FAU will be off on Monday and will return to the practice field 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, a day that they will begin full focus on ASU. All practices are free and open to the public.
