BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's men's tennis team currently holds an 8-3 dual match record and has earned a national rank of No. 59 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) computer rank of the 2009 season. This week also marks the second time in 2009 that sophomore Marc Abdelnour earned Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Player of the Week honors.
Along with the team's national rank, Abdelnour, who is 16-3 on the year and undefeated at 11-0 in dual match play, also received a national ranking of No. 77. In doubles play, Abdelnour has teamed with senior Eddie Majcher to earn a No. 49 doubles rank, marking the first FAU doubles team to be ranked among the nation's leaders. The Owls' three losses so far this season were against higher-ranked teams.
University of Denver (No. 57) and Middle Tennessee State University (No. 53) are the only other SBC teams to rank ahead of FAU. Sergio Ramirez from the University of South Alabama is the only other SBC player on the list and is ranked No. 47. John Peers and Robert McKenzie from Middle Tennessee State University is the only SBC double team ranked at No. 34, ahead of Abdelnour and Majcher who are currently ranked No. 49.
Abdelnour's rank places him among the country's top 4 percent and the team among the country's top 24 percent.
Abdelnour's recognition as the SBC Player of the Week came after he led the Owls to a victory with a 6-2, 6-2 road win at No. 64 Stetson University last week. The Syrian-import continued his impressive play in doubles action with Majcher, as the duo claimed an 8-3 win over the Hatters' tandem.
The FAU men's tennis team will travel to Orlando to face UCF on Friday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m. and will stay in Orlando to face Georgia State University on Saturday, March 7.
