All four members of the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team will be in action on Friday in the first round of the singles and doubles draws of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
FAU freshman Georg Matschke began his career on Thursday in a qualifying round loss to Ryan Smith of Georgia Tech. He fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 but will join teammates Marc Abdelnour and Lawrence Harradine in the main singles draw after receiving a wild card following the match.
Head Coach Brandon Stokes liked what he saw out of Matschke in his first collegiate match.
"He competed well for his first match as an FAU Owl," said Stokes. "He did get excited at key moments at the match, but that is a positive sign because it shows his competitive spirit.
Junior Marc Abdelnour comes into the season ranked 69th in the United States, according to the most recent ITA ratings, and will compete in the main singles and double draws competition divisions. He begins play on Friday at 11 a.m. against rival Vahid Mirzadeh of Florida State University. Abdenour will partner with freshman Georg Matschke in doubles action. The tandem is scheduled to face a team from Georgia State University in the first round.
Other early-round singles matches include junior Lawrence Harradine squaring off against Nate Schnugg of UGA, senior Daniel Vardag playing Aaron May of FSU. In doubles competition, the duo of Harradine and Vardag will begin play by playing a team from the University of Florida.
Action gets underway on Friday at 8 a.m. from the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
