BOCA RATON, FL - The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team held off a late rally by host Florida Atlantic University Sunday afternoon, beating the Owls 2-1 and earning a split of its two-match weekend road trip through South Florida.
EMU (3-2-2), a member of the Mid-American Conference, was coming off a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of unbeaten University of Miami Friday night.
Florida Atlantic (1-3-0) held EMU scoreless throughout the first half. Seemingly in control defensively, FAU did not allow a shot until the first half's closing moments.
However, the Eagles broke through seven minutes into the second half, ending the scoreless tie when Stephanie Janssens blasted a shot into the top left corner of FAU's net.
Moments later Deana Kinter changed the feel of the match completely when she scored in transition - set up via a pass from teammate Vanessa Atanasoski. Atanasoski assisted in both of EMU's two second-half goals.
FAU responded with offensive pressure but were unable to make a legitimate comeback threat until Ashley Mannarino's goal with three minutes remaining.
FAU plays at Stetson University on Friday, September 19 and at the University of South Florida on Sunday, September 21 before Sun Belt Conference play begins with a home match against Western Kentucky University on Friday, September 26.
