BOCA RATON, FL - Susanna Lehtinen scored in the final minutes of regulation and the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team picked up its first home win of the season against the University of South Florida, 1-0 on Sunday at FAU Field.
"It was a difficult game against a quality opponent, and we were able to score a brilliant goal to win the game at the end," said Dooley.
The senior from Espoo, Finland controlled the ball in traffic just outside the top of the box before firing a firm shot past the keeper and into the left side of the USF net for her second goal of the season.
Both teams struggled to find their offensive touch in the first half, with only three combined shots through 45 minutes. Each team's keeper was asked to make one save in the frame.
With the game still scoreless in the 60th minute, USF forward Lisa Bjorkvik fired a shot off the right post, and the Owls were able to clear the rebound. It would be the only real scoring chance for the Bulls in the contest, as they wouldn't register a shot on goal in the second half.
The Owls applied increasing pressure as the game went on, culminating with Lehtinen's goal.
FAU keeper Jessica Badders needed to make just one stop to preserve her third shutout on the year, second in a row. She has not allowed a goal in the last 240:13, spanning three games.
With the win, Florida Atlantic (3-3-0) evens its record, and will complete the non-conference portion of its schedule on September 21 in Gainesville, FL against the University of Florida.
