A three-run seventh inning gave UALR a 7-6 victory over Florida Atlantic University on Friday evening at FAU Stadium. David Klumpp pitched a complete game for the Trojans as they won the first game of the Sun Belt series.
The Owls (23-13, 6-10 SBC) led throughout the game until the seventh inning. The team jumped up 2-0 in the second inning as Mike McKenna and Travis Ozga started the inning with singles. With one out, Daniel Cook drove home the first run before a Nick Arata single plated the second run.
McKenna scored his second run of the contest in the fourth inning after leading off with his second of three singles of the night. Daniel Cook drove in McKenna with a double and scored on the same play after a UALR error saw Cook round the bases.
After surrendering the four runs, Klumpp (3-3) settled in to retire nine batters before allowing another FAU hit. He earned the win in his second complete game of the year as he allowed six runs on 10 hits, struck out five and did not allow a walk.
The only other runs he allowed was an unearned run in the seventh and a run in the eighth after two singles as FAU narrowed the lead to one. The team had the tying run on third base but a close play at first on a ground ball ended the FAU scoring threat in the eighth.
UALR (13-20, 3-9 SBC) was led by Robert Taylor's 3-for-5 performance at the plate and three RBI. The left fielder picked up two RBI in the fourth inning with a home run to left centerfield and then doubled in the sixth and eventually scored on an Osvaldo Torres double. Taylor was also part of the three run seventh as the Trojans posted four hits on the board in the frame.
Mike Obradovich suffered the loss to fall to 6-3 on the year after 6 1/3 innings. The junior allowed seven runs on 11 hits while striking out eight.
The three-game series will continue on Saturday with a 7 p.m. matchup at FAU Stadium. Chris Salberg is expected to counter Ashur Tolliver on the mound.
