In its first midweek game of the season, Florida Atlantic University used a two-run first inning to defeat the University of Maine, 3-1 on Tuesday night at FAU Stadium. Daniel Cook led the Owls with a three-for-four performance at the plate with two RBI to raise his batting average to .508 on the season, while the FAU pitching staff held the Black Bears to five hits.
Maine starting pitcher Brad Hertzler had a rough first inning as he hit the first batter he faced and then walked the bases loaded with one out. Cook (Miami, FL) then stepped to the plate to deliver a two-run single to centerfield for the early 2-0 lead. Hertzler then settled down and did not allow another run in his six innings of work as he struck out four. The left-handed pitcher suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year and the team falls to 2-2.
Chris Eberhart started the game on the mound for FAU (13-3). The junior made his second career start and earned the win as he worked three innings and allowed one hit while striking out three. Andrew Tomlin, Mike Obradovich, Brandon Cooney, Alex Pepe and Chris Salberg combined to throw the remaining six innings and allowed only four hits. Salberg earned his second save of the year with the final 1 2/3 innings of work.
The third FAU run came off of Pat Moran. He allowed back-to-back doubles to former high school teammates Nick Arata (Davie, FL) and William Block (Pembroke Pines, FL).
FAU will open Sun Belt Conference play this weekend when it heads to Western Kentucky University for a three-game series.
