In its first contest in the Sun Belt Conference, Florida Atlantic University defeated Western Kentucky University 13-3 on Friday night at Nick Denes Field. Mike Obradovich had a career night for the Owls as he pitched seven innings and struck out eight to improve to 4-0.
A close game through the first seven innings was broken open in the eighth as FAU (14-3, 1-0 SBC) posted 10 runs on eight hits all with two outs. The inning was highlighted by Daniel Bomback three-run homer.
Before the offensive explosion, a pitcher's dual between Obradovich and WKU's Liam Shanahan moved the game along. In the third inning, William Block delivered a 0-2 ball over the leftfield fence for his team-leading sixth homer of the season for the early 1-0 FAU lead. The Hilltoppers (5-7, 0-1 SBC) answered back in the bottom part of the frame with a home run of their own. Casey Hamilton hit his third home run of the season off Obradovich to tie the contest.
The Owls recorded another run off Shanahan before he exited in the sixth. Robbie Widlansky and Mike McKenna put together back-to-back doubles before Shanahan exited after 5 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four.
Mike McKenna led the Owls offense with three hits, while Bomback's three RBI was a game-high.
The two teams will square off on Saturday at 4 p.m. et in the three-game series.
