MOBILE, AL (March 31, 2007) - Jen Musillo worked a complete game shutout and struck out 13, as the Florida Atlantic University softball team picked up a 1-0 win in nine innings over South Alabama in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Jaguar Field. The Owls swept the doubleheader with a 4-2 win in game two.
The 13 punchouts were just two shy of her career-high, set earlier this season against Texas A&M. It was the fourth shutout of the season for Musillo.
The Owls would rally with three two-out singles in the top of the ninth to produce the game's only run. Blair Bodenmiller singled to left, advanced to second on Amy Bukovich's single and scored on a Becky Brandies RBI single up the middle.
The game came to an end on an outfield assist by Brandies, who threw out a runner trying to go from first-to-third on a single.
Kathryn Stauffer got the start in game two and worked five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. She left with a 3-1 lead and gave way to the bullpen. Amber Barton worked a third of an inning before giving way to Musillo, who came on to work 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for her second save of the season while striking out four more batters.
The offense got going in the third inning when Bodenmiller lifted a ball to left with runners on the corners. South Alabama shortstop Carolina Mendoza and left fielder Amanda Leggett collided, knocking the ball loose for an two-run double. Bodenmiller would double in another run to right center off the wall in the fifth.
Mandie Fishback singled in an important insurance run in the top of the seventh after a Brandies double, giving FAU a 4-2 edge after the Jaguars had got within a run with single runs in the third and sixth.
South Alabama would load the bases in the seventh with one out, but Musillo retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a popup for the final margin.
FAU (22-14, 4-4 SBC) will face South Alabama (22-13, 4-4 SBC) in the final game of the three-game series Sunday at Jaguar Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
