BOCA RATON, FL -- Charlotte Baird and the Florid Atlantic University softball team will host the Pepsi Classic, FAU's third tournament of the 2007 season, this weekend at FAU Softball Stadium.
James Madison, Bethune-Cookman, Illinois, Texas Tech and Jacksonville round out the field.
The Owls went 2-0 on day one of the FAU Classic, but stumbled to an 0-3 mark in the final two days. They are now 5-5 on the season and look to climb back over .500 this weekend.
Freshman Hailey Broyles leads the team in batting average at .455 on the season (5-for-11) with five runs scored and an RBI. She currently sports a four-game hitting streak. Charlotte Baird has the highest average of any Owl to appear in at least 7 of the team's nine games this season at .350 (7-for-20), including a pair of home runs which already ties a career-high she set last season.
Blair Bodenmiller leads the team in runs scored with six, while Amy Bukovich leads the team in RBI with five. Jen Musillo is tied with Baird for the team lead in home runs.
FAU is batting .231 as a team but thanks to 35 walks, its team on-base percentage is nearly 100 points higher at .326. FAU has scored 42 runs in 10 games.
The pitching staff has posted a 2.10 ERA, with Kathryn Stauffer leading the way with a 1.17 ERA. She's allowed two earned runs in 12 innings of work and held opponents to a .186 batting average against. Meghan Doonan has also been solid in the early going (1.46) as has Jen Musillo (2.33). Tara Grady has thrown two scoreless innings in the season's first few weeks.
JMU is 2-3 and most recently dropped a 3-2 decision to North Florida. Bethune-Cookman swept Savannah State to improve to 3-0 on the season despite having just 11 players on their active roster.
The Fighting Illini are now 5-5 after dropping their final game of the Louisville Slugger Tournament, 6-4, to UNLV. All four runs for Illinois came home on a Molly Lawhead grand slam in the sixth inning.
Jacksonville is 2-7 on the young season, and has yet to put together an offensive attack. The Dolphins are hitting just .214 as a team with just 11 extra base hits on the season and have given up 10 runs in each of their last three ball games (vs. Kansas, South Carolina and Florida State).
Texas Tech took part in Arizona's tournament last weekend, going 3-1 against the field, including a 6-0 win over Middle Tennessee State. The Red Raiders are 6-4 overall on the season and boast a .290 team batting average.
