The Florida Atlantic University's swimming and diving teams got off to a fast start and the women lead after the first day of competition at the Sun Belt Championships. Lauren Shue, Lindsey Alexander and the 400 medley relay team of Alexander, Ellie Weberg, Jennifer Forcht and Bianca Murphy all won events. On the men's side Eren Onurlu broke the school and Sun Belt record in the 50 free.
Shue started the individual events by posting a Sun Belt record in the 500 free. Her time of 4:51.55 is an NCAA `B' cut time. The Owls picked up four of the top five spots in the event as Jenny Harms, Brittany Fabry and Shawna Griffith rounded out the top five.
Alexander also earned an NCAA consideration time of 2:03.72 in the 200 IM to win the event.
In the preliminaries on Thursday morning, Onurlu broke the FAU school record and his own Sun Belt record with a time of 20.17. He returned for the night session and won the event with an NCAA `B' cut time of 20.16 to pick up 20 points for the men.
The FAU women added to their point total by winning the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:46.29. The time broke the old Sun Belt record that was set in 2006.
The three-day event will continue through Saturday as the women try to defend their 2006 conference title.
