BOCA RATON, FL - A 14-point comeback in the games final minutes fell just short for Florida Atlantic University (4-19) (0-10 SBC), as they fell to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock (14-8) (6-5 SBC) 60-57 on Saturday evening.
With 2:15 left UALR held onto a 57-53 advantage. The Owls turned the ball over, but got it back off a missed triple. Shuteamia Brayboy had the ball stolen, but Bianca Sellers swiped it right back and glided down the right lane to narrow the deficit to 57-55. After a Rachel Smith turnover Sellers again drove the lane, but this time contact was made and the ball flew over the backboard and the Trojans got it back.
After two missed UALR free-throws, Brayboy hit an uncontested lay-up to narrow the score to 59-57 with seven ticks on the clock. Nikya Hughes hit one of two free-throws on the ensuing play and Brayboy missed a two with her foot on the line as time expired to secure the Trojans 60-57 victory.
The first half started slowly on both sides, with FAU falling behind 8-6 with 13:30 left. UALR scored 11 uncontested points to hold a 19-6 advantage at the 9:29 mark. FAU would respond and cut their deficit to 22-17 on a Brittney Crenshaw jumper. After building their lead back to 10 with four minutes to play in the half, the Owls closed out the frame with an 8-1 run that took them to the half down by three.
Demina Anderson scored 10 of her 12 points in the opening stanza. She would finish the day with five rebounds and two blocks.
In the second period UALR built its biggest lead to 50-36 at the 9:23 mark. The Owls would hold them to 10 points for the rest of the ball-game, but could only shoot 37.9 percent from the field during their second half rally.
The press defense look worked well for FAU as they created 21 turnovers that they turned into 19 points. FAU was out rebounded for the second straight game, 40-30. On the free-throw line the Owls shot 14-18 (77.8 percent), their best mark since they put in 87.9 percent from the line against Akron.
Arkansas-Little Rock was led in scoring by Nikya Hughes, who had 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. She also tallied eight rebounds. Kim Sitzman and Anshel Cooper put in 17 and 11 points respectively in the victory.
Florida Atlantic heads back on the road this week for a two-game stand. They will open with Arkansas State on Wednesday in Jonesboro, AR. Tip-off is set for 6:35 eastern and can be heard live on fausports.com.
