BOCA RATON, FL (August 26, 2006) - Despite a dominant first half, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team was unable to erase an early deficit, as the Owls dropped the season opener against College of Charleston, 1-0.
In the sixth minute, Cougar forward Chrissy Caruso redirected a corner kick from Danielle Jordan past Owl goalkeeper Megan Coyne for the game's lone goal. It was the only shot in the first half for the Cougars.
"We got punished with one mistake and had multiple opportunities to make up for it, but Charleston defended well to win the game," head coach Brian Dooley said.
The Owls swarmed the Cougar net throughout the first half, firing 11 shots in the first 45 minutes. Six reached the goal, but College of Charleston goalkeeper Erin Smith was equal to the task.
The second half featured a more even contest, though FAU controlled the ball for much of the final 25 minutes. The Owls would make several strong plays toward the net, including Alicia Tirelli's redirection off a corner kick in the 78th minute that nearly found the corner of the goal, but was swatted aside by Smith. Tirelli would fire another shot just over the crossbar in the game's final five minutes.
Michele Fazzari led FAU with four shot attempts, while Christina Chang registered two shots on goal. Fazzari, Tirelli, Meredith White, Beckie Ware, and Devon Romak had the others.
Sonia Richards made her FAU debut in the starting lineup, while Tessa McGarrity, Taylor Browning, Nicole Farrell, and Romak came off the bench in their Owl debuts. Jessica Sachs also made her soccer debut after playing four seasons on FAU's softball team.
