Boca Raton, FL - The 2006 recruiting class for the men's tennis team of Florida Atlantic University was ranked no. 20 by Tennisrecruiting.net, FAU head coach David Komie said Thursday.
"The recruiting classes' rank is exciting and confirms our belief in the fine individuals that will join the program either as incoming freshmen or transfer students," said Komie. "But, we also understand that we have a lot of work to do before it equates into winning matches."
FAU accumulated 63 votes by a panel comprised of reporters, national and international tournament directors, referees, ranking chairmen and writers. The University of Georgia received top honors.
Daniel Vardag, who was already announced following the signing of a National Letter of Intent, is Tennisrecruiting.net spotlight player however each has distinguished himself through various tournaments and honors. Vardag received four stars by Tennisrecruiting.net and holds a no. 97 recruit ranking.
While Vardag's ranking is impressive, he is joined by newcomers Olivier Sajous who holds Davis Cup experience, is the 2005 Sun Sentinel Athlete of the Year, and is ranked third in the Florida Men's Open Division. Osvaldo Benitez is currently ranked no. 30 in the Men's Open Division and climbed as high as a top-30 rank in Argentina before moving to the United States to train. Lawrence Harradine of Switzerland has been training extensively at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona Spain and recently won an ITF event in Dubai.
FAU is scheduled to open 2006 play September 8 at the Southern Intercollegiates.
