BOCA RATON, FL - After playing 33 of its first 35 games at the friendly confines of FAU Softball Stadium, the Florida Atlantic University softball team hits the road for its longest trip of the season.
The Owls, coming off a split with Kennesaw State on Saturday night, will take on South Florida rival Florida International (17-20) at University Park in Miami at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The game is the first of nine straight away from Boca during the next 12 days for FAU.
Florida Atlantic travels to DeLand on Saturday for a doubleheader with conference-leading Stetson before having three Atlantic Sun doubleheaders in Tennessee over Easter weekend. FAU returns home on Saturday, April 22 against Mercer.
Florida Atlantic rallied for an 8-4 win over Kennesaw in Saturday's late game, scoring six runs in the sixth inning. That dramatic victory reversed FAU's fortunes from the first game, when it surrendered six runs in the last three innings and fell to KSU by the final of 6-2.
The game with FIU is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. Florida Atlantic closes the regular with the Golden Panthers on May 3 in Boca.
The doubleheader at Stetson on Saturday will present the Owls with the opportunity to position themselves well for the final month of conference play. FAU (16-19, 4-2 A-Sun) currently trails the Hatters (29-7, 4-0 A-Sun) by two losses in the A-Sun.
Miami native Erica Demers, a graduate of Palmetto Senior High School, is having an MVP year for Stetson. A true freshman, Demers is 17-1 on the year with a league-high 12 shutouts.
The Hatters have shown a potent offense, outscoring opponents 173-55 and batting .308 as a team. Led by Melissa Wiggins' .418 average, 11 doubles, nine home runs and 44 RBIs, Stetson has six batters hitting .302 or higher on the season.
Florida Atlantic will rely on the bats of junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) and senior Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.). Corso's .333 average, 14 runs, .429 on-base percentage and 11 walks top the Owls, while Sachs is on a 10-game hitting streak to raise her average to .289 overall and .526 in conference play.
Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), junior Meghan Doonan (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.) are battling for the top-two spots in the pitching rotation. Stauffer (6-12, 2.25 ERA) has been Florida Atlantic's biggest weapon in the circle, striking out 85 batters while walking just 26.
Doonan (2-0, 2.50 ERA) will make her third start of the season this week after returning from injury one week ago. Musillo (5-6, 3.31 ERA) has struck to 44 batters in 72.0 innings this season.
