BOCA RATON, FL - Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw her first career no-hitter as the Florida Atlantic University softball team run-ruled Mercer 8-0 in five innings at FAU Softball Stadium on Saturday evening.
Stauffer allowed two base runners - one via a walk in the first and one on an error in the fifth - and struck out two. She faced 16 batters, one above the minimum, in pitching the program's 19th all-time no-hitter and its first since Candice Freel defeated UCF 1-0 in 11 innings on May 5, 2004.
Stauffer got plenty of run support early in the game, as FAU put three runs on the board in the first and then added five in the fourth. Classmate Kala Guy (Hollywood, Fla.) had her first career triple and totaled two runs, two hits and three RBIs in the game.
Senior Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and junior Jenna Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.) scored two runs each, while Lopez also had two RBIs in the game. Stephanie Rossman took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings in falling to 7-12 on the year.
The win moved Stauffer to 8-13 on the season and gave FAU a split of an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader with the Bears (23-23, 9-5 A-Sun).
Game One: Mercer 8, Florida Atlantic 2
Mercer had two big innings of its own in the opener, scoring three in the second and five in the fourth. C.J. Martin's two-out bases-clearing triple plated all three runs in the third and Sarah Harding's grand slam concluded the scoring with two outs in the fourth.
Katie Rosentreter (15-10) went the distance, striking out five, walking none and scattering seven hits to get the win for Mercer. A two-run double by Sachs in the fifth scored Lopez and freshman Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) with Florida Atlantic's two runs.
Junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.) fell to 7-7 with the loss, surrendering all eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. Junior Tara Grady (Prescott, Ariz.) was effective in relief, giving up one hit in 3 1/3 innings.
Senior Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) had two hits for FAU. Haley Tallent scored twice for Mercer, while six other Bears crossed home plate in the game.
Florida Atlantic (24-22, 11-5 A-Sun) has a quick turnaround after the split, traveling to Jacksonville on Sunday for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch in an A-Sun doubleheader with the Dolphins.
