BOCA RATON, FL - A tale of two games for the Florida Atlantic University softball team on Tuesday evening at FAU Softball Stadium.
Florida Atlantic (7-11) exploded offensively in the opener of a doubleheader with Boston University (3-6), collecting a season-high 17 hits to go along with a season high for runs in a 13-5 win in six innings. The Owls had six extra-base hits in the game, also the best mark of the season.
Freshman Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) sparked the Owls, collecting three hits, scoring twice and batting in five runs. Her three-run home run during a five-run first was her second bomb of the year.
Senior Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) got things rolling in the first inning with her first home run of the season. Florida Atlantic then scored runs in every inning except the third.
Four runs crossed the plate in the fourth, behind doubles by junior Jenna Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.), classmate Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Brandies. Senior Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) closed the scoring in the fourth with a two-RBI single.
Consecutive singles by freshman Kala Guy (Hollywood, Fla.), Corso and Brandies, along with Corso's steal of home, resulted in two runs in the fifth. Sophomore Charlotte Baird (Hendersonville, Tenn.) punched her fourth single of the game into left field in the sixth and eventually scored the game's final run.
Baird doubled her season total for hits and raised her batting average from .143 to .250 on the year. Lopez also had a triple in the second and eventually stole home for the first of her two runs.
Junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.) moved to 4-1 on the year, going the distance while allowing four earned runs.

The nightcap was much different as the Owls (7-11) totaled five hits and were blanked 5-0. Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) fell to 1-9 with loss.
The game was eighth time in nine losses that Stauffer has received run support of one or fewer runs from the Owls' offense. She struck out seven batters and walked none in the game.
Brandies collected two more hits to raise her batting average .436 overall. Her 17 hits, six doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs are all team highs, as is her .744 slugging percentage.
FAU had seven runners reach scoring position, including three opportunities with a runner on third and only one out. Stauffer surrendered a three-run home run in the third and two RBI singles in the fifth.
Florida Atlantic is back in action Thursday afternoon, hosting Boston College at 5:00 p.m. in a single game at FAU Softball Stadium.
