Mickey Storey threw Florida Atlantic University's first no-hitter since 1994 as the Owls defeated Campbell University 2-0 Friday night at FAU Stadium. Storey struck out 10 and allowed one walk as he improves to 4-4 on the year with a 2.86 ERA.
The complete game was Storey's third of the season and the sophomore now has 76 strikeouts in 63 innings of work for an average of 10.86 strikeouts per game.
"Storey pitched great," said head coach Kevin Cooney. "He dominated and the game and was very effective. He handled both the left-handers and right-handers really well. Since the Mercer series he has worked hard and changed some things and since then has been outstanding."
Entering the eighth inning, extra innings looked possible with a 0-0 score. Both starting pitchers had been effective. Campbell's Blake Herring had only allowed one hit and had struck out six before the eighth. After recording the first out of the eighth, Blake (2-1) gave up a home run to William Block who now leads the team with five home runs after picking up two in the last two games.
Anthony Albano followed Block's hit with a double, the third extra base hit for the Owls on the night. The senior advanced to third on a single from Nick Arata before a sacrifice fly by Jordan Hafer plated the second run as Florida Atlantic improves to 15-14, 4-6 A-Sun.
The Camels (8-18, 3-7 A-Sun) entered the game with the highest batting average in the Atlantic Sun Conference at .313.
The three-game series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Two lefthanders are expected to square off in game one with Chris Salberg facing Jonathon Walker. Game two will feature Brandon Cooney and Quinn LeSage.
--John Sammon was the last pitcher to throw a no-hitter. He did so in 1994 against Florida A&M.
