Florida Atlantic University opened the season with a loss to no. 9 Tennessee on Friday night at FAU Stadium, 12-1. The Tennessee pitching staff only gave up three hits to hold the FAU offense in check.
Mike McBryde, Mike McKenna and Jordan Hafer picked up hits for FAU (0-1), but the Owls' pitching staff could not stymie the UT bats. The Volunteers picked up 14 hits off of nine FAU pitchers. Mickey Storey suffered the loss for the Owls after winning his last nine decisions last season. Story gave up five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings on seven hits and struck out five.
Julio Borbon led Tennessee (1-0) with three hits, while Chris Kemp and Michael Riviera each added three RBI. Kemp picked up his three RBI on a home run in the third inning to open the lead up to 4-0.
"I didn't think we had real good at bats against James Adkins at the start and the turning point of the game was the home run by Kemp," said FAU head coach Kevin Cooney.
Adkins (1-0) worked four innings and struck out four, while allowing three walk and one run on one hit.
The three-game series will continue on Saturday at 7 p.m. FAU's Joel Schmal is scheduled to face Josh Lindblom in the contest.
