BOCA RATON, FL --- Heading into the final weekend of the regular season the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team controls its own destiny as it quests for its first Atlantic Sun Conference Championship and the top seed in the postseason tournament.
"It is a good feeling being in this position," head coach Chancellor Dugan said. "However we understand that the job is not finished and we need to continue to take one game at a time."
FAU (16-9, 15-3 A-Sun) is tied for the conference lead with the Belmont Bruins (19-6, 15-3 A-Sun) with two games left on the schedule for both teams. Belmont will battle Lipscomb tonight in the A-Sun/CSS Game of the Week, while the Owls will take on the Lady Bisons of Lipscomb on Thursday, Mar. 2, 9:00 p.m. EST., before closing out the season at Belmont on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 6:30 p.m. EST.
At 6-2 in A-Sun road games this season the Owls have posted their second best road mark in conference play since joining the Atlantic Sun in 1994. FAU has swept its last three multi-game road swings, but did fall to Stetson in Deland 64-63 in overtime on Feb. 8.
The Owls handed the Lady Bisons a 74-57 loss on Jan. 21 at FAU Arena and have been red-hot ever since, winning 10 out of their last 11 games. In the first meeting between the two foes Shontavia Williams recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Susan Beauzil netted a career-high 10 points and fellow freshman Brittney Crenshaw added 10 points of her own.
Dana Carrigan scored 16 points in the first match up to lead the Bisons' attack. Carrigan and Katie Beth Pate average 8.6 points per game respectively to direct the Lipscomb offense.
FAU will conclude its regular season in a Saturday night showdown against the Lady Bruins of Belmont at the Curb Event Center. The Bruins dealt the Owls their only conference loss at home this season, 71-50, on Jan. 19. Belmont is also the only team in the A-Sun who yet to suffer a conference loss at home this year.
Five-time Player of the Week winner Alysha Clark leads the Bruins with 20.4 points to go along with 10.7 rebounds per game .The freshman posted 23 points and 10 boards in her first trip to FAU Arena.
