After two days of competition at the Sun Belt Championships, the Florida Atlantic University's women's swimming and diving team leads the field. The Owls lead five-time Sun Belt Champion Western Kentucky by 45 points and will try to take away the championship from the Hilltoppers who have a five-year run as conference champion.
Both the FAU men and women started the day with wins in the 200 medley relay. Lindsey Alexander, Ellie Weberg, Jessica Lampkin and Jennifer Forcht broke the FAU, Sun Belt Conference and championship record with a time of 1:43.68 to pick up 40 points for the women.
With a time of 1:30.59, Jonathan Pinto, Kevin Bartell, Kenny Anderson and Eren Onurlu picked up the men's third relay win in the 200 medley relay.
Anderson, Bartell and Onurlu returned two events later to sweep the top-three spots in the 100 fly. Swimming in his final season, Anderson returned from an appendectomy approximately a month ago to set a new school and conference record in the event in 49.01.Bartell followed in 50.03 and Onurlu posted a time of 50.14.
In the 100 breaststroke, Bartell picked up his third top-three finish of the day as he won the event ahead of teammate David Parker. Bartell touched the wall in the 54.47 to break the FAU record and beat out Parker with a time of 54.70.
The story of the day for the Owls was Ellie Weberg's swim in the preliminaries of the 100 breast. The junior swam an NCAA A Standard time of 1:01.68 to break her own school record and conference record by more than a second. Her time of 1:02.40 in the finals was still two seconds faster than the next competitor.
To close out the second day, Geni Burts, Ashley Carlozzi, Lauren Shue and Jenny Harms won the 800 freestyle relay in 7:34.66
The champion will be crowned in Denver after the final session, which begins at 7:30 p.m. et Saturday evening.
