Owls Ready for A-Sun Championship

BOCA RATON, FL -- Head coach Alex Smolka believes his Florida Atlantic University women's track team is ready to do its best this weekend at the Atlantic Sun Championships in Johnson City, TN.
"I think we're ready. It's been a rough couple of days with the cold weather, but I think we are as ready as we can be," Smolka said.
Numerous school indoor records have fallen and any athletes have set new personal records, but the main focus throughout the season has been prepairing for this weekend. The A-Sun Championship is scheduled for Feb. 17-18.
In the team's final season of competition in the A-Sun, the Owls have put together a solid 2006 campaign, and Smolka hopes it translates into something special this weekend.
"We expect to perform as well as we can. If that happens, we should do very well," he said.
This year's senior class is one of the strongest in FAU history. Smolka feels that this class is ready to leave their stamp on the program.
Seniors Raynell Hagberg (800m, 1,600m) and Yanique Booth (55m and 60m hurdles) have posted top times among A-Sun competition, and you don't have to look far down the performance list to find other Owls among the top performances in other events. Several others litter the top times among all of the events.
One senior that will be unable to take part in the championships is Shanon Demarest. Her injuries will not allow her to participate this weekend.
"Shannon is disappointed. She would have helped us a lot."
