BOCA RATON, FL -- A three-game winning streak has brought the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team to within a game of .500 early in the 2006-07 campaign.
The Owls will have seven days off between games before the team heads to Orlando, FL to face UCF (5-0). It will be the final game in a season-opening six-game home stand for the Golden Knights.
Sophomores Paul Graham (16.6 ppg) and Carlos Monroe (16.3 ppg) lead the Owls in scoring, with Monroe averaging a double-double (22.7 points and 10.3 rebounds)during the three-game winning streak. He's posted his two highest scoring outputs of his young career in his last two games with a career-high 28 points against Florida Memorial and 24 against Norfolk State. Graham has scored in double-figures in every game this season and has averaged 4.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists over his last there games.
The Owls have seen improvement in nearly every area during the past three games. In the four season-opening losses FAU was 90-for-212 (.425) while its opponents were 114-for-207 (.551) from the floor and won by an average of over 23 points. In the three wins, the Owls have shot 86-for-154 (.558) and held opponents to just 63-for-160 (.394). FAU has also forced 57 turnovers in the three wins and has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (53-to-46) as well as a positive rebound margin (97-to-91, +6). The Owls have outscored their last three opponents by over 20 points per contest.
The Golden Knights have won five straight to open the season, outscoring their opponents by just over 26 points per contest (83.4-57.0). They are led by Jermaine Taylor (17.4 ppg) and Josh Peppers (12.2 ppg). Taylor leads the team in scoring despite coming off the bench in all five games this season. He's been deadly from deep this season, hitting 13-of-24 treys (.542). The team's leading rebounder, Tony Davis (6.6 rpg), also has come off the bench in every game this season.
UCF is shooting 51.8 percent from the floor as a team and 43.8 percent from downtown. They are averaging 19.2 assists per game and have out-rebounded their opponents by 16.2 per game.
FAU has won each of the last two meetings between the schools, but UCF holds a 20-7 series advantage.
