BOCA RATON, FL -- Natalie D'Oria scored early and Christina Chang scored late to lift the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over South Alabama on Friday at FAU Field.
Susanna Lehtinen, who assisted on Chang's goal, lofted a corner kick into the box in the 11th minute. It was controlled by the Jaguars, but D'Oria pounced on a loose ball and slammed the ball past the keeper for the game's first tally.
Controlling the ball much of the first half, similar to the way the team played last season on the way to its first NCAA College Cup appearance, the Owls held a 6-1 advantage in shots after 45 minutes, and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
Monique Cabrera would add some distance between the Owls and the Jaguars when she accepted a flick just outside the box from Beckie Ware and dribbled in on Jaguar keeper Kelsie Langford before firing a shot inside the far post for a 2-0 Owl lead.
The strong play continued in the second half, as both Tessa McGarrity and Alicia Tirelli would create breakaway opportunities, but were denied by Langford. Chang's goal in the 71st minute sealed the victory for FAU (6-7-2, 3-4-0 SBC), earning the team its third conference win.
Megan Coyne got the start in net for FAU and played 74:12 of shutout soccer, making one save. Jessica Badders came off the bench and finished off the shutout playing the final 15:48. She did not face a shot on goal.
The Owls finished the game with a 12-3 shot advantage and a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The contest was the first home match since the team's victory over Western Kentucky on September 24. The Owls will look to continue the strong play at home when Troy enters FAU Field on Sunday at noon.
