CORAL GABLES, FL -- Susanna Lehtinen kept scoring, but this time it wasn't enough, as Florida Atlantic University fell to the University of Miami 2-1 in women's soccer Friday.
"We're disappointed with the outcome," head coach Brian Dooley said. "Our seniors had a chance to go 4-0 against Miami." The Owls had won the previous three meetings with the Hurricanes.
The Owls had their chances, but couldn't convert. They hit a post and a crossbar in the second half, but it was the Hurricanes that were able to find the net late in the contest.
After the Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick, Lehtinen buried a cross from Ashley Mannarino to even it up at one.The goal is Lehtinen's fourth goal this season. She has scored four of the team's five goals.
Three minutes into the second half, Katri Nokso-Koivisto hit the post. Ten minutes later, Lehtinen hit the crossbar, which proved to be too many opportunities missed for FAU. Miami would score on a failed clearing attempt eight minutes later.
Miami played a much more physical game than the Owls have played to this point, and it seemed to knock them off their game a bit.
"We didn't handle the physical aspect well," Dooley said. "We lost our focus and struggled to clear the ball."
Jessica Badders saw her first collegiate action, making the start in place of Megan Coyne. She allowed two goals and made five saves in her first career start.
Florida Atlantic will now turn its attention to a looming giant, #3 UCLA. The Owls will take on the Bruins Sunday at 6 p.m. in Coral Gables, FL.
"It's a great opportunity for our program. In order to be successful, these are the games we need to play," Dooley said.
