Danny Core's entire baseball career has been about proving people wrong. So it should be no surprise that the former Westminster Academy and Florida Atlantic right-hander finds himself once again trying to turn doubters into believers as a pro.
In high school, he went 30-1 and pitched for the gold medal-winning Junior Olympic team in high school...and was ingnored on draft day.
As a junior at FAU, he won seven consecutive decisions, threw six complete games and was an all-conference pick...and was ingnored on draft day.
So now, three seasons after finally being drafted, he finds himself stuck in Low A ball with a 4-5 record with a 7.22 ERA for Lansing, Mich., in the Midwest League.
"I can't complain about what's happened to me," he said after using his low-90s fastball to hold Kane County to a run on five hits in eight innings last weekend, his best outing of the season. But he followed that by allowing five runs in four innings in a loss Friday. "It's been a long year. I've been battling all year. I need to be more consistent."
But Core's inconsistency on the mound has been matched by the Blue Jay's inconsistency in handling the right-hander who turns 24 today.
In three seasons, he has gone from reliever to starter to reliever and back to starting again.
Despite all that, Core says, his future finally feels as if it's in his own hands -- or right arm.
"Year by year," he said, "things have been going well for me."
