BOCA RATON, FL - For the fourth time since 1998, Florida Atlantic University will serve as host of the Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championship. The tournament begins this Thursday and runs through Saturday at FAU Field in Boca Raton. Florida Atlantic is the top-seed in the six-team field. The other teams, in order of seeds, are UCF, Troy State, Stetson, Mercer, and Gardner-Webb. The winner of championship receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Tickets are available on a walk-up basis or by calling (866) FAU-OWLS.
FAU, which is in its 10th year as a program, has won the tournament a record seven straight seasons. This year, the team has won 50 of its 65 games and is receiving votes in both national polls. It's the third time in FAU history the Owls have won 50 or more games in a season.
The Owls' success is due in large part to its pitching and, particularly, Candice Freel. The junior is 24-7 overall and fifth in the nation with a 0.64 ERA. She leads the A-Sun in almost every pitching category. As a team, FAU is eighth in the nation in ERA (1.07) and 14th in winning percentage.
At the plate, Pam Mazzarella leads the team with a .384 batting average. She has an eight-game hitting streak entering the tournament and has collected 14 hits in her past 19 at-bats.
FAU's 50 wins marks the third time in team history the team has reached the 50-win plateau. Since March 2, the Owls have gone 35-6. They enter the tournament with a four-game winning streak, including a dramatic doubleheader sweep of UCF in the regular season finale that elevated FAU past UCF in the standings and secured the regular season championship.
FAU has participated in each A-Sun Championship since the program's inaugural 1995 season. In that time, the Owls have posted a 33-6 record and are 12-0 in tournament games at FAU Field.
Florida Atlantic faces Gardner-Webb Thursday at 1:00pm in the opening round. The double elimination format means all teams will play twice on Thursday. Should FAU defeat GWU, it would play Thursday at 8:00pm against the loser of the Troy State-Stetson game. Friday's game times are 3, 5, and 7:00pm with the championship scheduled for Saturday at noon. Live scoring and updated results will be available on www.fausports.com.
