BOCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University head women's basketball coach Chancellor Dugan has announced the team's 2002-03 schedule. The slate is highlighted by 11 non-conference games, which includes three tournaments, and 16 Atlantic Sun Conference games.
The team begins play on November 22 at the Marshall University Classic. The Lady Owls will take on Georgia Southern in their season opener. Other non-conference road games include Louisiana State and Miami (FL) as well as a tournament at Georgia Tech featuring East Carolina and St. John's.
The Lady Owls' impressive home schedule gets underway November 29 with Louisville. It also includes the Radisson Suites Roundball Classic December 6-7 with Bowling Green, Pittsburgh, and UNC-Wilmington joining FAU in the four-team field. Florida Atlantic will also take on Eastern Michigan and Long Island at FAU Gymnasium before beginning A-Sun play in January.
The number of A-Sun games has been trimmed from 20 to 16 due to the addition of a 12th team, Gardner-Webb, and the re-introduction of two divisions. FAU will take part in the A-Sun South, which will also be comprised of Central Florida, Stetson, Jacksonville, Troy State, and Mercer. The A-Sun North includes Samford, Belmont, Jacksonville State, Georgia State, Campbell, and Gardner-Webb. This season's A-Sun Championship will be hosted by Central Florida, March 13-15, in Orlando.
"We're very excited about this year's schedule," said Dugan. "Our home schedule will be exciting for our fans, especially with the Radisson Suites Roundball Classic in early December. Overall, I think our non-conference schedule gives us the opportunity to build off of last year's success and will prepare us for another tough conference schedule."
Florida Atlantic is coming off its best season ever after advancing to the championship game of the A-Sun Tournament. Dugan, who enters her fourth year as head coach, led FAU to 17 wins in 2001-02, the most ever by the team since moving to Division I in 1993.
