So now it's my turn to tell the Internet surfers my thoughts on the team. Well, I guess I have to begin with last year, which was my first year as a part of the Blue Wave. I entered last year with the mindset and the prayer that this baseball team was better than the one I had played for in the past. Don't get me wrong, I am not talking about the guys that were on my team but I am talking about the lack of winning we had. Plus the fact that I was coming home to play in front of my Mom, yes that is Mary McNab, and my Dad. So a lot of excitement and high expectations were weighing on my back. First of all, I had to prove to my teammates and my coaches that I was actually worth having on this team.
So yes, I earned my way to a starting spot at second base, and I did say second base, against the #3 ranked Miami Hurricanes. And to make a long story short and a .200 batting average later, I was then knocked out of the starting lineup. So it did end up being a frustrating year for me last year. No complaints though, I just didn't get the job done when I was asked to get it done. But then conference tournament time came and maybe the weirdest situation in my baseball career took place. An 8th inning defensive replacement turned into me getting pulled from left field and onto the mound with a 1st and 2nd nobody out situation. Kinda shocked, but at the same time excited to be getting that chance and with some great defense behind me, we got out of that inning with no runs. We did go on to lose that game vs. Central Florida courtesy of that masked man from that scary movie (Mike Meyer).
So me and the guys go into this year with the high hopes that every team goes into every year with. But we have the team to do it. And when I say do it, I mean things this school has never experienced. I don't mean win 34 games in a row again or anything like that, but we can get to Super Regionals and farther. I know this because I do trust my gut feeling. So as we continue on working to become that team that everyone knows we can be, we sit at 6-4. With a trip to Minnesota in our future, we know what we have to do. Flat out I know we will get it done so I will not waste time cramping my fingies.
I have made a bold decision that one of our goals is to have as much fun as we can this year. So I figure that this team needs someone to keep the more frustrated guys calm. So I figure I would take over that role. I like to be the one with the witty comment or two, or three, that may keep the guys laughing. I play this game because I have fun doing it, and I almost had that fun taken away from me once. So I will not let that happen to me again. Coach Cooney and Coach Mac help keep the team less tense at times, but the real true memories and friendships come from the teammates out there on the field with ya. And having fun playing a game you love is how that happens.
So to all the seniors, this is our last ride, so if you tend to get mad at little things, I understand. And if an error behind you bothers you, I understand because I am in your shoes. (Benny) ahahhahah But let's have a ball and laugh our way all the way to the conference championship and take it from there. -Tim McNab
