BOCA RATON - While most were enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday, Florida Atlantic University's women's basketball team was busy hosting games and working with the Wayne Barton Study Center.
The FAU Athletic Department works with several organizations to better the lives of both the children and the lives of the athletes. The Lady Hoopsters began spending time with Avant, an adult assisted living community as well as hosting several youth clinics in 2001-02.
With the season heavily underway, the squad has added another branch to its community outreach this season. That organization is the Wayne Barton Study Center, a center that provides underprivileged middle and high school students with a conducive environment for studying and doing homework.
The women's basketball team posted a team 2.94 g.p.a. in 2001-2002 and are working one-on-one with children in a designed reading program to better the youth's reading skills.
This weekend, FAU is hosting the Radisson Roundball Classic featuring Pittsburgh, UNC-Wilmington and Bowling Green State. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m., Saturday.
