BOCA RATON, FL -
The defense defeated the offense 22-13 in Florida Atlantic University's first intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Tom Oxley Practice Field. Thomas Parker and Dekolan James each had touchdowns for the Owls as they gear up for their inaugural game September 1 against Slippery Rock at Pro Player Stadium.
The offense struggled most of the day against a defense that forced two turnovers and had five sacks.
"(The offense) got disjointed," said head coach Howard Schnellenberger. "They got out of sync and never were able to regain it. They resorted to trying to score easily and whenever you (do that) you don't score at all, and that's what happened."
The defense took an early 5-0 lead in a scoring system where the offense scores in traditional ways and the defense is awarded points for turnovers and stopping drives. In the next series, led by Garrett Jahn, the offense needed just two plays to get on the board as Jahn hit Parker with a 50-yard touchdown pass to give the offense a 7-5 lead.
The defense, however, scored the next 17 points to take a 22-7 lead. Lee Pasick recovered a fumble while Jack Fenelon had an interception during the stretch. On the final play of the scrimmage, Dekolan James scored on a seven-yard run
"We had our chances for the backs to make some big cuts, " said Schnellenberger of the running game. "But the defense was coming a little faster and little harder than in our last scrimmage when we made a lot of big runs."
In all, Parker caught six passes for 123 yards. Garrett Jahn went 14-of-27 for 186 yards along with a touchdown and an interception. Jared Allen went 15-of-24 for 194 yards. On the ground, Doug Parker finished with 46 yards on 13 carries while James had 19 yards on nine carries.
Twelve different receivers caught at least one pass as Doug Parker and Eric Harper each had four catches on the day.
Florida Atlantic will hold its next intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday at 4:00pm at the Oxley Practice Field.
