BOCA RATON, FL -
For the second straight year, Florida Atlantic University figured in men's and women's tennis player-of-the-year honors from the Trans America Athletic Conference while once again receiving coach-of-the-year honors on the men's side. In addition, a host of Owls received first-team All-TAAC honors.
On the men's side, Doug Devriendt, a junior, was named TAAC Player-of-the-Year. Head coach Mike Wheelen repeated as Coach-of-the-Year. On the women's side, Kristen Jordan repeated as Player-of-the-Year.
All-TAAC awards were handed to Devriendt, Yalin Bilgin, and Martin Jirak for the men. Jordan and Maria Aguirre-Gomez were All-TAAC selections on the women's side.
Both FAU tennis teams had record-setting seasons in 2001. The men won their first TAAC Championship and earned their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. They will face Texas in the first round May 12 in Baton Rouge, LA. They also broke the 20-win plateau for the first time. The Owls (21-4) are currently ranked 50th in the nation.
Individually, Devriendt went 23-10 overall, and 17-3 in dual match play. He was 16-2 at no. 1. Bilgin went 14-3 at no. 2 and 20-9 overall while Jirak was 23-5 overall and 16-3 in dual play.
On the women's side, the team completed its best season with a 13-11 record. They advanced to their first TAAC championship title match. Jordan, who was ranked as high as 59 this season, finished the season with a 33-4 record, including a 20-2 dual match record all at no. 1. Her two-year career record was 59-7. Aguirre-Gomez, a freshman, finished 15-8 overall, 15-7 at no. 2. She ended the season with a 12-match winning streak.
Last season, the same trio received player and coach-of-the-year honors with the exception of Devriendt. In 2000, Juan Ros was named player-of-the-year.
