Florida Atlantic University (30-20, 10-11 TAAC) held their own in the first game of a doubleheader against visiting Stetson University (40-6, 19-2 TAAC), but fell 6-3 in seven innings. FAU led in the second game before Stetson had four runs cross the plate in both the third and fifth innings for a 9-4 victory. Mike Valdes had a 9-for-13 weekend to lead FAU.
Game one saw Florida Atlantic slowly gain a lead by scoring one run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings before Stetson earned three runs in both the sixth and seventh to take the game. FAU got things started in the third with a Gabe Somarriba double followed by an RBI single by Mike Valdes, one of his five hits on the day.
In the fourth, a Rusty Brown double fueled the offense for FAU. He advanced to third on a Rob Orton single and then scored on a miscue by the Stetson catcher. Lee Bagley threw down to second to get the stealing Orton but the second baseman and shortstop were no where to be found as Brown took advantage of the error and scored.
Two singles and a hit batter lead to a Regan Samaniego RBI in the fifth to give FAU a 3-0 lead.
Two straight errors by the FAU infield was all that Stetson needed to get the sixth started. Jeff Christy got one of his four RBI when he doubled and Lee Bagley followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Hatters two unearned runs. Frank Corr got the third run of the inning when he singled to right field to get his only RBI of the game.
With the game tied at 3-3 the Hatters only needed one pitch to Christy to take the game. He drove a three run homer over the center field fence to assure Stetson of the 6-3 victory.
Brian Sullivan kept a perfect record alive and earned his tenth victory.
Petersen Benjamin (5-4) took the loss for FAU after pitching seven innings, striking out nine, walking none, and giving up seven hits.
Game two saw FAU again take the early lead with two runs in the first when pitcher Jason Oglesby gave up a hit, walked a batter and then saw Brown drive a single through the left side to score one. The second run of the inning came in bizarre fashion as Oglesby tried to pick off a stealing Brown, but lead to LJ Biernbaum stealing home during the play.
Both teams tallied a run in the second before Stetson found some offense in the third for four runs.
Florida Atlantic scored in the bottom of the inning when Brown's double was followed by an Andy Thoms RBI single.
Two singles, a walk, and a three run homer by Christy finished the scoring for Stetson in the fifth and a final score of 9-4.
With the win, Oglesby moves to 9-3. Roger Lincoln earned his first save of the season.
Danny Core ( 4-8) pitched 4 2/3 innings and took the loss. Jim Cooney, Chris Della Rocco, Tim McNab, and Travis NeSmith all saw action in the game.
Florida Atlantic travels to Jacksonville State this weekend for a three-game series.
